A stalwart of British music hall, he appeared in the Royal Command Performance of 1953, performed to packed audiences around the world, and hosted his own shows on BBC radio (The Voice of Variety) and ITV (Meet Ronnie Ronalde).
Among his more unlikely fans was the late John Peel, who inserted Ronalde discs amid the prog-rock fare on his BBC Radio One programmes. Ronnie discovered his talent for whistling after an uncle offered to give him a shilling if he could whistle for a taxi the next time he visited their house, and he began entertaining the locals in an Islington pub with his new skill, adding renditions of birdsong to his repertoire.
His mother accompanied him on the piano, and the “punters” paid them with coins tossed into a pint mug.
In 2010, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he caught the attention of Jamie Foxx, who gave him free recording space and a place to stay while he was in the city. He has since released one very successful album, and has won a number of awards.
